    Demarest today takes up approx. 2.1 square miles of area with a population of 4,938 people,
    a full -time police department and a volunteer fire department and ambulance corps. Located only 8.5 miles
    north of the George Washington Bridge to NYC, Demarest is  predominately & overwhelmingly a residential
    community with a total of 1,634 housing units.

    Known for its attractive tree-lined streets and small town charm & tranquility, Demarest is a small
    affluent, friendly bedroom community, nestled around its famous Duck Pond and the 19th century landmark
    railroad station. Built in 1986 by a group of Demarest citizens to promote peace in the community and in the
    world, the famous Peace Site Gazebo located at the Duck Pond is a special place for residence and visitors
    alike.

    Nestled amongst picturesque towns, Demarest is bordered on the north by Closter, the south by
    Cresskill, the west by Haworth and by Alpine on the east. The conveniences of modern day technology and
    the beauty of the Duck Pond and the many acres of forest and open recreation land of the Demarest nature
    center, all combine to give Demarest its special character. Convenient location with easy commute to
    New York City, small borough size and a terrific school system all make this town very desirable and special.

    A quaint downtown Demarest mini business district consists only of a few shops, a bank, post office,
    public library, the Borough Hall, the volunteer Fire Department standing guard since 1894 as well as the
    Volunteer Ambulance Squad. This centralized area is very well defined so that the overwhelming majority of
    the boroughs space which is dedicated to residential use is unimpeded by any commercial encroachment.

    NYC is a short driving distance away via the George Washington Bridge which is only 8.5 miles from
    the center of Demarest thus making it an ideal suburb location for commuting to and from Manhattan.
    Rte. 9W & The Palisades Parkway, both along the eastern boundry of the borough, put the commuter within
    minutes driving time of the GW Bridge.  Public transportation is also available with frequent direct bus service
    to NYC as well as to other points in NJ.

    Although currently Demarest has no direct train service from town, commuter trains are available not
    too far away with park-n'-ride stations in River Edge and Hackensack, about 15-20 minutes away by car.
    Discussions are also underway to possibly revive the historic rail line running through the center of town for
    commuter purposes at nearby points to the south of town in Cresskill and Tenafly. Although historically the
    coming of the original train line in the 1860’s played a major roll in the further development of the area, now
    days, with the exception of very limited freight activity, this line is hardly in use. The possibility of future direct
    light rail service is till in the discussion and planning stages and a while away, however it remains an option
    which if and when brought to fruition will create added value to this already hot in-demand  real estate  region.

    Major Airports in the area include Newark Liberty in NJ, about 35 minutes driving time, and two NY
    airports as well. La Guardia is approximately 35 minutes away and JFK at about 50 minutes to an hour.
    Travel times are approximate and of course depend on traffic so it is always wise to plan airport trips at off-
    peak times to avoid rush-hour traffic when possible.                                                                                                

    The works of man and nature have always achieved a special balance in Demarest.
    From the beginnings of human settlement in the area until the present day, some aspects of nature have
    always played a role in Demarest's development. It continues to appeal to those who seek a peaceful
    community near the thriving metropolis of New York.
    Most new residents are professionals or business executives who like the small town charm, peaceful
    atmosphere, fine schools, and the simple commute to NYC.
    Demarest prides itself in its volunteers who make the town a caring and safe community. For over 200
    years Demarest residents have striven to preserve and protect its beauty.
