CRESSKILL's HISTORY

    The area of today’s Cresskill was initially inhabited by the local Hackensacky and Lenni Lenape
    American Indians. Dutch animal trappers and fur traders started settling the area some time in the
    year 1643, thereafter slowly the local Indians were being displaced as the new Dutch arrivals
    established themselves and began farming the area. During the Revolutionary War, the farms in
    Cresskill were raided by the British.

                                     The Borough of Cresskill was incorporated in May of 1894.

    The community was named as a place where water”cress” grew, plus "kill," Dutch for creek,
    formerly also named “Lower Closter”.

    During World War I, Cresskill was the site of America’s largest army embarkment camp and major
    distribution site, Camp Merritt. The monument standing tall at the famous traffic-circle intersection of
    Madison Avenue & Knickerbocker Road is a Memorial to those soldiers who gave their lives for their
    country while on duty at Camp Merritt. It faces the highway over which more than a million American
    soldiers passed on their way to and from the War during the years 1917 to 1919.
    Dedicated in 1924 by General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing, the man who led the American forces
    to fame and triumph in World War I, today the Camp Merritt monument serves as a famous local marker
    on the border of Cresskill and Dumont.

    Later, following World War II, Cresskill experienced a major growth spur, accommodating many     
    returning service men and their growing families who were anxious to raise their children in a small
    suburban town. They settled here and became involved in the schools and community as they made
    Cresskill their new home.
